(Santa Fe, NM) – – New Mexico Lt. Governor Howie Morales issued the following statement on Tuesday upon a Minnesota jury issuing a guilty verdict on all three counts against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin:

“The verdict in Minnesota shows that the system can work, and that gives me hope for the future. I am praying for the family of George Floyd, whose life cannot be brought back. Today was a victory for justice. But the national outpouring over the past months of anger, despair and frustration caused by George Floyd’s brutal killing by police – and of many others in similar ways – demands of leaders and citizens that we create new policies that end racial injustice in our country, and in New Mexico. I am committed to working to confront systemic injustice and inequality, and to push for policies that uphold decency, fairness and respect for human life.”
